Some time ago, I tried starting a new series of posts here called "Eroge Play Report" where I would post updates of games I was playing, and my choice for a first game was this one. Needless to say, that series didn't pan out the way I wanted and died out with only two posts. It was a mix of not having enough to say and not having a regular enough playing schedule to do consistent updates. It was just an ill-conceived idea from the start. Still, I eventually played (or rather, replayed) this game in full and now I bring a full review for both the people who read those posts back then and got curious about it and people who never heard about it.

Premise

Ane Ane W Saimin is a mind control visual novel where the protagonist, Kenji, uses a hypnosis device to gradually brainwash and enslave his brother's wife Kumiko and her younger sister Yuka.

Kenji is a college washout who lived his entire life in the shadow of his brother Junichi. He's smarter, more handsome and more accomplished than Kenji in basically anything, and he's not only become a high-ranking executive of a huge company but managed to capture the heart of the CEO's beautiful daughter, Kumiko.

Kumiko is a sheltered young woman with innocent ideals about love and a bit of a clean freak side to her. They married and moved to a big house in a rich neighborhood that also houses most executives from the company Junichi works at. Kumiko spends her days as a stay-at-home wife cooking, cleaning and having tea parties with the other housewives of the neighborhood, who act nice towards her but are actually pretty mean-spirited. Kumiko's younger sister Yuka also lives in the house. She's a headstrong and prideful college student who wants to have her own career and path in the world. She loves her sister a lot and shows a bit of a childish side around her.

And then there's Kenji. He also lives in Junichi's house and while Kumiko tries her best to treat him as family, Yuka makes her hatred of him pretty clear. Kenji is creepy, unhygienic, lazy, everything she dislikes in a man, and she refuses to acknowledge him as family. On Kumiko's part, she also finds Kenji creepy and dirty, but she wants to be welcoming for Junichi's sake. With Junichi taking an extended trip to Brazil to take charge of the company's branch there, Kenji is left to live alone with the two women, which fuels his desire. He masturbates to them, steals their socks, that kind of thing.

And so Kenji's bitter daily life of living with two beautiful women who are beyond his grasp continues, until one day he stumbles upon a strange website with promises of a revolutionary invention that can change people's minds and bodies to suit his desires. An app-controlled mind control device with speakers that uses subliminal sounds below the range the human mind can consciously register to make gradual changes to the victims. The website puts an outlandish price of 100 million yen, but also says select people can try it out for free. Thinking it's a scam but it may be funny contacting them, Kenji uses a burner account to contact the admin on social media. The admin talks through an avatar called YAMI, and strangely enough, Kenji can hear a voice in his head (a condescending little girl voice) despite not having any text-to-speech function turned on. They talk at length about how the app works and Kenji ends up convinced, while YAMI decides that Kenji's "yami" (typed with our alphabet, so it could mean either darkness or sickness) is strong enough for him to qualify for a free run.

When the device arrives, - consisting of a custom-made tablet to control it and a bunch of speakers -, Kenji installs the speakers in the shared spaces of the house, as he has no access to Kumiko and Yuka's rooms, and waits for the subliminal to take effect. It takes over two weeks, to the point he starts wondering if he did fall for a scam after all. Of course, it's for real as one day the tabled sends a notification and he finds Kumiko in a trance in the living room, and he even gets to feel her breasts before the time is up. Filled with dark desires, Kenji aims not to turn his life around and earn their love or anything so sweet, but instead to make the two his slaves and steal everything his brother has.

Game Flow and Content

The game has two diverging routes and several endings that can be triggered depending on what order you do things.

As for how the mind control works, this is not an instant hypnosis app where the protagonist presses a button and the heroine is ready to do the most outlandish things. Kenji must push the boundaries very slowly least the hypnosis breaks and he's caught red-handed sexually abusing his brother's wife and sister-in-law. While it doesn't take long to start having non-penetrative scenes and sex earlier rather than later, the narrative takes its time to convincingly establish the foundations of Kenji's control beforehand. Kenji also gets freaky with the weak-willed Kumiko much faster than with the stubborn Yuka. And the perspective alternates between Kenji and the heroines, so we do see how the piling up subliminal instructions (most of which are of the "alteration of common sense" type) go about twisting their logic into normalizing or ignoring the strange and lewd behavior, until they degrade into horny shells of their former selves.

Pink-colored eyes indicate whether the target is under direct hypnosis, but as the game progresses, the line between being in and out of trance starts to blur and disintegrate

The standout thing about this game for me is the writing. Not that it has an intricate plot, but that it succeeds in showing the gradual change of the girls and especially in drawing attention to the before and after, to how much Kenji has destroyed Kumiko and Yuka's original moral values and feelings and reshaped them into something that fits his desires. Most mind control games that involve lasting change have the heroines go through this process, but most that I played aren't as interested in shining a light on it through writing, and that's what I find so sexy about this game. Here the feeling of corruption through mild control is the focus.

As said before, game is divided in two routes, one where Kenji decides to play it safe and brainwash both sisters at the same time so he doesn't raise suspicion, and one where he decides to train Kumiko first to gain experience with the hypnosis device before tackling Yuka. Both routes are about turning the girls into sex slaves, only one has a veneer of (fabricated) love while the other has Kenji seeing them toys.  There's a fair amount of shared scenes and content behind the routes as Kumiko's training always plays out the same, while Yuka's is completely different depending on the route, but ultimately reaching the endpoint for her character. Basically:

Kumiko is made to lactate (the device can do that and stuff like alter genital sensibility) and believes that is a sickness caused by the inherent lewdness of her body, which makes her too ashamed to seek a doctor. Fortunately, Kenji knows the treatment, which involves squeezing the milk out of her breasts. However, despite the palliative treatment, her symptoms keep worsening, as she starts having orgasms when she goes to the bathroom and being aroused by just being around a man (Kenji). As Kumiko keeps consulting with Kenji about her sickness, her bond of trust deepens and she discovers deeper feelings for him, eventually accepting Kenji as her true husband whom she always secretly loved as she settles into the role of his slave-wife, complete with vaginal piercings as wedding rings and a new perverted wardrobe. Kenji is of course having a blast twisting her mind into this ridiculous scenario every step of the way.

As for Yuka, Kenji is much more direct. He keeps her conscious hate of him intact (as he can't break her defenses and make her believe ludicrous things like Kumiko), but makes her body react positively to his scent, his touch, his semen. Yuka starts getting horny around him, which makes her even more irritated, and she has to wrestle with her feelings of hate and disgust and the very real sensations Kenji awakens in her. Depending on the route this provides Kenji the chink on her armor he needs, getting closer to her at home, making her consider the possibility that she's falling in love with him, while in the route where he laser focuses on Kumiko, Yuka gets her guard up, keeps these new feelings bottled up and ends up engaging in perverted behavior like breaking into his room to steal his underwear, which then Kenji leverages against her. In  the end, no matter the path, the only way to completely break Yuka's pride and bring her completely under the thrall of the hypnosis is to make her believe she's even less than a slave like Kumiko, that she's a pig, livestock. And in both routes the ways Kenji goes about breaking her are just delicious to watch.

There are twists and turns along the way, as the human mind isn't a simple thing and the girls' minds are at risk of relapsing back into sanity if Kenji's not careful (especially Yuka, since she's more resistant to hypnosis than Kumiko, and can bite back).

The sexual content of the game includes the usual penetrative (both vaginal and anal) and non-penetrative sex, and it also dabbles into BDSM quite a bit. There's also a decent amount of group scenes. While there aren't extreme acts such as scat, anal object expulsion, ryona and so on later POISON games would often depict in the HCG (the closest being an enema scene that shows censored brown liquid inside the enema tube, but is otherwise clean), there are references to them in dialogue, as the daily life in the household becomes more and more twisted and sexual, which is a big plus for those who like seeing the effects of the mind control over a long period of time.

These mundane "be woken up by Yuka, go to the kitchen meet Kumiko" daily routine scenes that play out several times during the game are one of the ways the writing calls attention to the growing change in the sisters' personalities.

Nothing brings a family together like brainwashing

While the game doesn't explicitly feature scenes with other men, there's one specific ending in the route where Kenji is more ruthless towards his slaves and doesn't mind whoring them out. But that never materializes as CG, being discussed in text only.

Therein lies what is perhaps an issue some will have with this game - there are lots of scenarios that are discussed and referenced but not depicted. The game isn't lacking in scenes, but most of them take place in the house and focus on Kumiko and Yuka's brainwashing and training. A lot of things that come between that and the ending scenes are just talked about. The game is reasonably big and sprawling as it is, so I wouldn't call it incomplete, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't left with a feeling of "I wish I could see that scene" when some unseen events are described.

I'll go in more detail about the endings now. As usual, skip to Conclusion for my final thoughts and score if you don't want to know.

Spoiler Talk - The Endings

Let's talk a bit about the endings. Excluding the bad endings (which range simple stuff like Kenji getting arrested to crazy scenarios like Yuka, brainwashed to be in love with Kenji, going full Yandere and using a hypnosis device of her own to commit a lovers' suicide with him), there are 5 endings in the game,.

While both routes branch early on and eventually see both Kumiko and Yuka get brainwashed and Kenji becoming a trainer-for-hire for YAMI, the "hypnotize both girls at the same time" is more focused on the girls, while the more ruthless "train Kumiko first" route deals with the bigger picture.

The first has one ending for each girl and the threesome ending.

Kumiko's ending is the weakest one which is a shame since she's my favorite. Kenji used brainwashing devices to get her entire family on his side and just pressured her and his brother into a divorce, as well as using her father's authority to keep him in the foreign branch of the company forever. The last scene is Kenji and a pregnant Kumiko filming a goodbye video to him. The big attraction here is seeing Kumiko pregnant, and I'd also like to call attention to how she swears that the daughter she's gestating and the daughters she'll have from there on out will become Kenji's slaves alongside her.

Yuka's ending is a lot more fun. They're having sex as they plan her wedding. Yuka is hypnotized and goes along with Kenji's wild ideas like having her suck off the priest and her dad, the obscene wedding dress, and so on. The catch is when Kenji snaps his fingers (a trigger used during the game to bring her in and out of hypnosis), she gets even more excited. The personalities have fully merged. An earlier scene in this route plays around with that idea, it's how Kenji overcomes the last amount of resistance she still had, but putting her in and out of trance and making her say things while fucking her all night. So it's nice payoff to that.

In both "solo" endings, the other girl is still around living in the house and is still Kenji's slave (well, in Yuka's ending Kenji and her are about to move to a new house, but Kumiko will have a room there) she just doesn't get a scene.

The threesome ending is simple and effective - Kenji lies in bed with Kumiko being his pillow and Yuka sucking his dick. I'll be honest and say that since this is the ending I've played the longest time ago - it took me months to actually sit down and finish this review -, I don't remember the details. To unlock it you need two optional scenes that are pretty fun, having Kumiko and Yuka compete for Kenji's attention and all. In the ending proper they are more mellow, already used to fucking Kenji together.

The second route's endings focus more on the whole "Kenji becomes a slave trainer for YAMI" concept which is only briefly mentioned in the others. As in every ending, Kenji's training videos popularity skyrockets and YAMI gives him and offer to become a full-time trainer, accepting requests to train high-profile women for clients who want to brainwash them but aren't as skilled with the device as Kenji is. Kenji accepts, and in this route YAMI also adds that since Kumiko and Yuka have a lot of fans, he can also hold some in-person events to earn a lot of money. Essentially whore them out. That's when the two endings split.

Denying this particular offer leads to an ending showcasing Kenji's training someone who's not Kumiko and Yuka - who remain his exclusive slaves. To his surprise, the women requested are the housewives who always hang out with Kumiko. After they've been exposed enough to the device, Kenji has Kumiko and Yuka come out in their slave outfits, Yuka taunting gloating about being a slave while Kenji fucks Kumiko, offers them the opportunity to join her in slavery. They end up accepting.

Between this and the final scene there's a few dialogue segments with a pregnant Yuka waking up Kenji and offering to drink his morning pee, not a shard of her pride remaining, as well as Kumiko walking around in a BDSM getup as Kenji describes that he filmed her getting the tattoos on her ass (that read "Kenji's Slave Kumiko") while crying tears of joy and saying that was the happiest moment of her life and mailed that to his brother, of whom he hasn't heard since (earlier in the route they had already broken up, Kumiko throwing her wedding ring down the toilet, this is just to add insult to injury. Kenji briefly wonders if his brother won't kill himself over it). Then, Kenji moves on the women, now complete slaves, and we get some narration describing who they were and why they were targeted by YAMI. We also learn that unlike Kumiko and Yuka. Kenji has also been brainwashing one of the women's daughters, who is an idol, at the request of another YAMI patron. The mother is delighted that she gets to become a pregnant slave with her daughter. The other two get jealous and start offering best friends and female relatives for Kenji to brainwash as well. Good stuff. The last scene itself is an orgy where Kenji fucks the woman who is training her daughter as a reward while the other two and the daughter worship his body.

Accepting YAMI's offer leads into a scene where Kenji films a video pouring bottles of semen collected from several patrons into Yuka and Kumiko's pussy as they despair, breaking their illusion of "only wanting to be touched by Kenji". It's a decent scene for those who enjoy breaking the slaves even further. I've heard some people say it's their favorite scene in the game, even. Honestly, it does little for me.

After that, we jump further into the future, with narration about how Kenji trained many women, even celebrities and CEOs. He then holds an in-person event with a pregnant Kumiko and Yuka, crawling on all fours while Kenji holds a leash. They are embarrassed to be in front of a crowd but if it's what their master wants, they'll do it. As they go into labor on stage, Kenji auctions the opportunity of fucking them in the ass to "help push the baby out" to patrons, and soon a large line assembles. Kenji also announces that whoever cums inside them when the baby comes out gets the right to impregnate them next. The CG however just zooms in on Kumiko and Yuka's faces, not showing other men or a birthing scene. Really cheapens the scene in my opinion. Still, it's nice to see how far gone both Kenji and the girls are in this end. Kenji is dispassionate, treating them like they really are just things, while the two are loyal to Kenji to the extent they'll do anything he commands, even fucking other men despite loving him. I assume budget constraints made they choose to zoom in instead of draw more variations for the scene, which is a shame.

Final Thoughts

Ane Ane W Saimin is a really strong game brought down by some issues, chiefly the lack of some CGI variants. The moment-to-moment writing is strong, to the extent this review fails to do it justice because it can't go into detail (that's why I had the terrible idea of the "Eroge Play Report" series, I wanted to go into detail about this game), but the endings, now that I look back on them, left a lot to be desired. It's not that they're bad, it's just that the game was so good that most endings feel like "the game just decided to stop here" rather than a proper conclusion. Mundane may be a good way to describe them. Only two out of five feel conclusive of those two I only really liked one, Yuka's ending.

The art is good and in my opinion the best in the series (I'm well aware this is a niche opinion, the artist's art just went in a direction I don't like as much), the game uses mind control and corruption tropes masterfully, being the rare eroge that is ABOUT it and not just using it as a tool for quick and easy sex. The main characters have very well-defined personalities, which makes it all the more satisfying watch them get reshaped into the protagonist's slaves, and the voice actresses deliver their A-game, especially Yuka's voice actress who gets the chance to display some good range as Yuka has wild mood swings, going from low menacing tones to screeching in anger (and later, as her brainwashed self speaks with a honeyed sweet voice).

Another issue that comes to mind is that Kumiko receiving the same training in both routes while Yuka has completely different scenes makes the game feel uneven. Between this, the impression of the game lacking CG variants and the lackluster endings, it makes me think the game could have used a little more time in production.

That said, it's still one of the strongest mind control eroge I have ever played as far as the use of mind control as a tool for permanently changing people goes. It avoids common traps of the genre and while it uses many commonplace ideas (app-controlled hypnosis, for one) it adds its own twist to them and doesn't feel derivative. And I'm willing to cut the technical side some slack because this was POISON's second game, way before they became the more resourceful company they are today.

Despite the few shortcomings, I strongly recommend it.

Pros
- Good writing that uses mind control as an actual story and erotic element and not as an easy excuse to get to the sex
- Good art and coloring
- Great voice acting, particularly from Yuka (Ayane Mako)

Mixed
- The protagonist is human trash. Not only he's very immoral and cruel but he's also petty, selfish and can at times come out as whiny. Some may find him unlikable due to that personality. Personally, I liked how cruel and unfair he was towards the heroines, I like my protagonists evil.
- Mentions of offscreen events in some routes may rub some the wrong way

Cons
- Some CG feel unfinished or lacking variation
- Shared scenes between the routes skewing heavily towards Kumiko's scenes makes the game feel uneven, despite both sisters supposedly being equal
- There is a certain disconnect between what you actually chose and what goes down in the routes. Focusing on heroine x or y cascades into Kenji being more or less ruthless in his training without real inciting incidents

Score: 7.5/10
